# Bed Bug Treatment in Gilbert and the East Valley

Bed bug treatment from Platinum Pest Management starts with an inspection to confirm bed bugs, followed by targeted treatment of the bedroom and follow-up visits timed to the egg cycle. We treat houses, apartments and condos in Gilbert and across the East Valley.

## At a glance

- Bed bugs usually reach East Valley homes in luggage, secondhand furniture or a visitor's belongings, and in apartments they can also move between units through shared walls.
- Bite marks alone cannot confirm bed bugs, because people react differently and the bites look like other insect bites or skin rashes.
- Store-bought foggers and sprays rarely reach the seams and cracks where bed bugs hide, and they can scatter the bugs into other rooms.
- Platinum Pest Management treats bed bugs with an inspection, targeted treatment of beds, furniture and cracks, and follow-up visits timed to the egg cycle.
- Clearing bed bugs from a typical home takes more than one visit and usually several weeks, because eggs laid before the first treatment keep hatching for a week or two.

## How bed bugs get into East Valley homes

Bed bugs arrive with people and their belongings, and a spotless house can pick them up as easily as a cluttered one. Most cases start in one of these ways:

- Luggage coming home from a hotel, vacation rental or dorm
- Used furniture, especially mattresses, box springs and couches
- Visitors whose bags or coats carry a few bugs into the house
- Neighboring units in apartment and condo buildings

One mated female can start an infestation, and a problem caught early takes less work to clear. For prevention on the road, see our post on [avoiding bed bugs when you travel](https://platinumpestaz.com/blog/bed-bugs-travel-prevention/).

## Telling bed bugs from carpet beetles and bat bugs

An adult bed bug is flat, oval and reddish brown, about the size of an apple seed, and turns darker and plumper after feeding. Nymphs are smaller and paler, and the white eggs are about 1 millimeter long. Two other insects are often mistaken for bed bugs.

### Carpet beetles

Adult [carpet beetles](https://platinumpestaz.com/services/beetles/) are round, 1/8 inch or smaller, and often found on windowsills. They don't bite, but the fuzzy larvae shed hairs that can cause an itchy rash resembling bites.

### Bat bugs

Bat bugs look almost identical to bed bugs and can only be told apart under magnification. They feed on bats roosting in attics or under roof tiles and bite people mostly after the bats leave, so the roost has to be addressed along with the bugs.

## Why bites alone can't confirm bed bugs

Bed bug bites look like mosquito bites, flea bites or hives, and even a doctor usually can't tell what caused a bite by looking at it. Reactions vary widely, and some people never react at all, so two people can share a bed and only one of them has marks.

We confirm bed bugs by finding live bugs, shed skins, eggs or dark spotting before recommending treatment.

## Where to look for bed bugs in a bedroom

Bed bugs hide close to where people sleep. A flashlight and an old gift card, slid along seams and cracks, make the search easier. Start with these spots:

- Mattress seams, piping and tags
- Box spring corners and the fabric stapled across the bottom
- Headboards, especially joints and screw holes
- Nightstand joints and drawer corners
- Outlet covers near the bed

Besides live bugs, look for pale shed skins, tiny white eggs and small black or rust-colored spots. The spots are digested blood, and on fabric they soak in like a dot from a felt-tip marker.

*We check mattress seams and edges first.*

## Why store-bought foggers and sprays often spread bed bugs

A fogger's mist settles on open surfaces, while bed bugs stay in seams, cracks and wall voids the mist doesn't reach. University testing has found that foggers do little to bed bugs in their hiding places.

Many bed bug populations also resist pyrethroids, the insecticides common in store-bought sprays and foggers. Bugs that survive tend to move away from the treated area, into other rooms or through the wall to the next apartment. If a product has already been used, tell the technician which one so we know where to look.

## How our bed bug treatment works

Platinum Pest Management treats bed bugs over more than one visit, since no single treatment reaches every bug and egg.

1. **Inspection.** A thorough inspection of the beds, furniture and nearby cracks confirms bed bugs and shows which rooms are involved.
2. **Targeted treatment.** We treat mattress and box spring seams, bed frames, upholstered furniture, baseboards and the cracks and crevices near where people sleep. Products are EPA-registered and applied by licensed technicians according to the label.
3. **Follow-up visits.** Eggs hatch in about one to two weeks, and many products don't kill them. We return about two weeks after the first treatment to catch the new nymphs before they mature, and again if we still find activity.

## Preparing the home for bed bug service

Preparation gives the technician access to every seam and crack. We go over this checklist at the inspection.

- Strip the beds and run all bedding through a hot dryer for at least 30 minutes.
- Empty nightstands and dressers in affected rooms and dry the clothes the same way.
- Seal dried items in clean plastic bags until the technician says to unpack.
- Clear clutter from under the beds, on floors and in closets.
- Pull beds and furniture away from the walls.
- Vacuum mattresses and carpet edges, then seal the bag or canister contents in plastic for the outside trash.
- Keep sleeping in the same bed, because moving to the couch can spread bed bugs to a new spot.
- Cover fish tanks and turn off their air pumps.
- Plan for people and pets to be out during treatment and until treated areas dry.

## Bed bugs in apartments and multi-unit buildings

In apartments and condos, bed bugs can spread between units through wall voids, along plumbing and wiring, and under doors. The units on each side and directly above and below should be inspected too, since treating one unit while the neighbors go unchecked is a common reason bed bugs return.

Renters should tell the landlord or property manager in writing as soon as they suspect bed bugs. Property managers can schedule multi-unit inspections through our [commercial pest control](https://platinumpestaz.com/commercial/) service.

## A realistic timeline for getting rid of bed bugs

In a single-family home with light to moderate activity, bed bug treatment usually runs four to six weeks, with two or three visits spaced about two weeks apart. Heavy infestations take longer.

Bites often continue for a week or two after the first visit, while bugs cross the treated areas and the last eggs hatch. We consider the job finished when follow-up inspections find no live bugs and no new signs.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I have to throw away my mattress if I have bed bugs?

Most people can keep their mattress. The technician treats the seams, piping and box spring where bed bugs hide, and follow-up visits catch the bugs that hatch afterward. Replacing a mattress makes sense if it is torn or badly damaged. If you do replace it, wrap and label the old one before it goes out, and wait until after the first treatment to bring in the new one.

### Can we stay in the house during bed bug treatment?

People and pets need to be out of the house while we treat and until the treated areas are dry. The technician will tell you how long that is for the products used. Once you are back, keep sleeping in your own bed, since bed bugs coming out to feed will cross the treated areas.

### How did we get bed bugs if the house is clean?

Housekeeping has little to do with it, because bed bugs feed only on blood. Most arrive in a suitcase or on secondhand furniture, and in apartments they can come through shared walls. Clutter does make them harder to find and treat. Our post on [checking for bed bugs while traveling](https://platinumpestaz.com/blog/bed-bugs-travel-prevention/) explains how to avoid bringing them home.

### Do bed bugs spread disease?

Bed bugs are not known to spread disease to people. The bites can itch, and heavy scratching can lead to a skin infection, so see a doctor if bites become swollen, warm or painful. For most families the bigger effects are lost sleep and stress, which is one reason to confirm the problem and start treatment early.

### How much does bed bug treatment cost?

The cost depends on how many rooms are involved, how much activity we find and how many follow-up visits the home needs. Platinum Pest Management provides a free inspection and a free written quote, with no obligation, before any treatment begins.
