It bites during the day, most often in the morning and late afternoon, and tends to go after ankles and lower legs. They breed in larger pockets of still water, including green pools, ornamental ponds, storm drains and low spots that stay flooded after irrigation or a storm. Culex species are the main carriers of West Nile virus in Arizona, and Maricopa County traps and tests mosquitoes for the virus every year. ## Why mosquitoes get worse during monsoon season Mosquito activity in the Phoenix area picks up once the monsoon arrives, roughly July through September. Storms refill containers and low spots all over the yard, and Aedes aegypti eggs sitting dry inside a bucket or saucer hatch when water covers them. Higher humidity helps adult mosquitoes live longer, too. In summer heat, mosquitoes can develop from egg to adult in about a week to ten days, which is why the checklist below is a weekly job. Activity often stays high into the fall, well after the last storm, because warm nights and irrigated yards keep mosquitoes going. These are the breeding spots we find most often: - Saucers under potted plants, and pots with no drainage hole - Buckets and wheelbarrows left upright - Children's toys and wading pools left out in the rain - Tarps and grill covers that sag and hold water - Clogged gutters and roof drains, and water pooled on flat roofs - Pet water bowls and birdbaths that are not emptied every few days - Green or neglected pools and spas - Irrigation valve boxes that hold water, and puddles under leaking drip lines or hose bibs A single neglected pool can produce enough Culex mosquitoes to affect several houses around it.
